Backup Email Messages:
As Outlook Express doesn’t
have a backup utility, backing up can be a bit
tricky (of course you wouldn't be here if it
wasn't!).
So, the first think you'll
need to do is locate where Outlook Express stores
your email messages on your computer. To do
this, open Outlook Express then select Tools
from the top menu bar and follow the steps below:
- Select Options.
- Click the Maintenance tab
across the top of the pop-up window.
- Click the Store Folder…
button to reveal the location of your message
store.
- You’ll need to copy this folder path
to the clipboard:
- Click in the box that contains the folder
address
- Right-click and choose Select
All from the drop-down list.
- Right-click the highlighted address
and chose Copy from the
drop-down list.
- Click Cancel
- Click Cancel again
- Then close Outlook Express.

Next we need to go to this
store folder in your hard drive. This can be
done very easily:
- Click the Start button.
- Click Run.
- In the Open box delete
any text that might be present.
- Then right-click in the empty Open
box and chose Paste from
the drop-down list.
- Click the Ok button –
this will open your message store folder in
Windows Explorer.
If you are unable to see any
files in this folder you may need to change
your folder options to show hidden & protected
files & folders – to show
hidden & protected files & folders go
here.

N.B. Make sure that Outlook
Express is closed before preceding any further.
With Outlook Express 6, Email
message folders are stored with the extension
(dbx). You should recognise your email folders
as they have the same name as they would in
Outlook Express (e.g. Inbox = Inbox.dbx, Outbox
= Outbox.dbx etc.).
To backup simply copy
& paste all the files in the store folder
to your desired backup location/device. That’s
it you’re done!
